Any diversion intended to distract attention from the main issue.

In literature a red herring is a narrative element intended to distract the reader from a more important event in the plot, usually a twist ending.

Get back to Something Fishy.

 

This is by the way not a Red Herring but it is a distraction from the main issue just like the one you have just read.
